Texas Tech Press Author Receives Major Award

"Melodie A. Cuate won first place in the juvenile book category recently in the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Western Heritage Awards for her book "Journey to San Jacinto."

The Western Heritage Awards were established in 1961 to honor those whose works in literature, music, film and television reflect the significant stories of the American West, according to the museum's Web site.

The book is the second of an ongoing series published by Texas Tech University Press. Cuate wrote the books as a way to make learning Texas history fun."

Texas Tech University Press Garners National Recognition

"Journey to Gonzales" by Melodie A. Cuate won the 2009 Western Heritage Award for Best Juvenile Book. This is the third book in Cuate’s Mr. Barrington’s Mysterious Trunk series published by Texas Tech University Press which features modern day children who have traveled back in time through a magic trunk to find themselves part of Texas history.

This is the second consecutive year Cuate has won the Western Heritage Award in this category, with “Journey to San Jacinto,” book two in the series, honored in 2008.
